Yahoo Is No. 1 in Traffic

It's only one month, but it probably bodes well for Marissa Mayer, who a few weeks ago celebrated her one year anniversary as Yahoo CEO.

According to comScore, her Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company drew more unique Web visitors (roughly 197 million) than any other U.S. Internet firm in July for the first time since spring 2011, besting rivals Google (192 million), Microsoft (180 million) and Facebook (142 million). Yahoo regained the top spot without adding stats from recent acquisition Tumblr, which drew 38 million viewers last month, comScore says.

When Mayer took over last summer, per the Reston, Va.-based research firm, Yahoo (163 million) was in third place behind Google (168 million) and Microsoft (163 million) and only led fourth-place Facebook by 2 million uniques. The sites aren't perfect apples-to-apples comparisons since they entail different kinds of Web properties, and comScore didn't include mobile in these figures. But the numbers can only bolster Yahoo's brand among marketers who have been wondering if the platform was diminishing in scale.

Meanwhile, comScore reports that Facebook's unique visitors have fallen from 161 million in July 2012 to 142 million last month, seemingly supporting the reports that the social giant had lost its cool factor with teenagers. At any rate, the researcher also found that AOL's traffic was up by 7 million in July compared to the same month last year when it totaled 110 million.
